The core of learning organization work is based upon five “learning disciplines” – lifelong programmes of study and practice:
1.Personal mastery
2.Mental models
3.Shared vision
4.Team learning
5.Systems thinking
Personal mastery means embracing creative tension.
1. Personal Mastery
Introduction
Imagine an organization full of people who come to work enthusiastically, knowing that they will grow and flourish, an intent of fulfilling the visions and goals of the larger organization. There is an ease, grace and effortlessness in the way they get things done. Work flows seamlessly among teams and functions. People take pleasure and pride in every aspect of the enterprise.
Definition
Personal mastery is a phrase used for the discipline of personal growth and learning. People with high levels of personal mastery are continually expanding their ability to cerate the results in life they truly seek. From their quest for continual learning comes the spirit of the learning organization.
Learning opportunity
Learning to expand our personal capacity to create the results we most desire, and creating an organizational environment which encourages all its members to develop themselves towards the goals and purposes they choose.

2. Mental Models
Introduction
One thing all managers know is that many of the best ideas never get put into practice. Brilliant strategies fail to get translated into actions. Systemic insights never find their way into operating policies. A pilot experiment may prove to everyone’s satisfaction that a new approach leads to better results, but widespread adoption of the approach never occurs.
Definition
As per cognitive scientists, this term refers to both the semipermanent tacit ‘maps’ of the world which people hold in their long term memory, and the short term perceptions which people build up as part of their everyday reasoning process.
According to some cognitive theorists, changes in short term in everyday mental models, accumulating over time, will gradually be reflected in changes in long term deep seated beliefs.
Learning opportunity
Reflecting upon, continually clarifying and improving our internal pictures of the world, and seeing how they shape our actions and decisions.
YOGIC APPROACH

Dynamic Meditation
3. Shared vision
Introduction
In traditional companies, the only meaning most members know has been handed to them from above – from a tacit hierarchy of meaning embedded in the organization’s authority structure.
If people could voice their hearts as they receive the organization’s “meaning from the high”, they might say, “Our top management has established our organization’s vision and strategy. My job has been defined within the strategy. I have been told to care about that job, but it is not my vision. I will do my best I can”. People may accept this” meaning” passively or they may feel resentful; but they will not feel enrolled.
Definition
Shared vision is an inspiring idea which has created a force in people’s hearts manifesting into an impressive and compelling power. Shared vision discipline is essentially focused around building shared meaning, potentially where none existed before. Shared meaning is a collective sense of what is important, and why.
Learning opportunity
Building a sense of commitment in a group, by developing shared images of the future we seek to create, and the principles and guiding practices by which we hope to get there.

4. Team learning
Introduction
By design and by talent, are a team of specialists, and like a team of specialists in any field, the performance depends both on individual excellence and how well they work together. None of them have to strain to understand how to complement each others’ specialties; it is simply a fact and all try to figure out ways to make the combination more effective. The moments of interactions are not merely physical of mental, but they are magical –a feeling difficult to describe.
Definition
Team learning is a process of aligning and developing the capacity of a team to create the results its members truly desire. It builds on the discipline of developing shared vision. It also builds on personal mastery, for talented teams are made up of talented individuals - the individuals know how to work together.
Learning opportunity
Transforming conversational and collective thinking skills so that groups of people can reliably develop intelligence and ability greater than the sum of individual members’ talents.

SWAN [GROUP]
5. Systems thinking
Introduction
During the last few years, a new understanding of the processes of organizational change has emerged. It is not top down or bottom up, but participative at all levels – aligned through common understanding of a system. It is possible because archetypes and other system oriented tools have put systems dynamics language into the hands of teams and on the walls of meeting rooms, where people energize learning at all levels.
Definition
At a broad level, ‘systems thinking’ encompasses a large and fairly amorphous body of methods, tools, and principles, all oriented to looking at the interrelatedness of forces, and seeing them as part of a common process.
Learning opportunity
A way of thinking about and language for describing and understanding, the forces and interrelationships that shape the behaviour systems. The discipline helps us see how to change systems more effectively, and to act more in tune with the larger processes of the natural economic world.
